Rename ist ein kleines Hilfsprogramm, das Dateien in einem Verzeichnis umbenennt. Rename eignet sich besonders, um eine größere Anzahl von Dateien automatisiert umzubenennen. Rename kann in allen Dateinamen in einem Verzeichnis bestimmte Zeichenfolgen suchen und ersetzen, kann Zeichenfolgen im Dateinamen löschen, oder kann allen Dateinamen Zeichenfolgen anhängen.
