AscToTab

AscToTab is a free utility that converts *plain* text and comma-separated or tab-delimited text files containing table data into tables. The program can create either HTML or RTF tables with the output written to file. For HTML tables the output can be direct to the clipboard, ready to paste into a HTML source editor. For plain text files AscToTab detects how many columns the table has; their alignment, and which rows are header rows. It can spot data that spans multiple columns or rows. For files containing tab- or comma-delimited data the table is built up line-by-line, with each value placed in a cell by itself. There are a large number of formatting options, so you can choose the fonts, borders etc and even to color odd and even rows differently. The software uses the same text analysis engine as AscToHTM and AscToRTF and is available under Windows and OpenVMS.

Detagger

Detagger is a Windows program that converts HTML files into good-looking text, or selectively removes HTML markup. As a markup remover, Detagger allows you to 'tidy up' your HTML in a number of ways. You simply select the classes of tags to be removed, sections of code to be stripped out, or tag manipulations to be performed. For example options include the ability to remove all FONT tags; remove tags added by MS Office applications; strip out HEAD or SCRIPT sections; convert tags to upper or lower case; and replace hyperlinks by just their display values. As a HTML-to-Text converter, Detagger allows you to convert HTML newsletters into a more compact and email-friendly format. The program will output the document as text, preserving the marked up headings, lists, tables of the original document and turning them into suitable text formats. Text will be laid out as faithfully as possible to the original document, within the constraints of your chosen page width. The software can cope with most tables (including nested tables), laying them out as tables in the text. Hyperlinks are replaced by the display text, and you can choose to have the URL displayed in the text, or added as an entry in a reference table added at the end of the document. Options allow you to dictate the page width of the output, and to add custom headers and footers to the output text. In either mode the selected options can be saved in "policy" files so that they may be easily reloaded in later sessions. The utility supports wildcards and drag and drop operation, making it well suited to whatever mode of conversion you prefer. After conversion, results can be viewed in a browser or text editor (depending on the type of conversion you've done). Registered users also get access to a console version for performing batch or automated conversions. Software developers can purchase an API version under separate license to add the functionality of Detagger to their own software.

AscToHTM

AscToHTM is a powerful and highly configurable utility that converts text files into one or more linked HTML files. It recognises headings, bullets, indentation levels, emphasized text, tables and ASCII art. Full HTML table generation is attempted on detected tables. Hyperlinks can be added to section numbers, URLs, email addresses, USENET newsgroups and to user-specified keywords. The software recognises four different types of headings, and these can be used to generate hyperlinked contents lists for your files. When converting multiple files a directory index can also be created. Large files can be split into a set of smaller pages linked by navigation bars. If wanted these pages can be placed in a set of frames, with contents list on the left, and user-supplied header and footer frames. Each page can have title, colours, standard HTML headers and footers, style sheets and meta tags added. A preprocessor allows the production of variant documents (e.g., for internet and intranet publication), and the use of embedded HTML and include files in the source text. The preprocessor also allows you to customize fragments of HTML generated, for example to use images in navigation bars and horizontal rules. The software comes with many options to customize the output which can be saved to "policy files" and reloaded at a later date. The software supports the use of wildcards, and can be used for batch conversion. The software is supplied with extensive documentation, which is converted from text to HTML by the software itself. Hyperlinks can be added to section numbers, URLs, email addresses, etc. The software recognises many different types of headings, and these are marked up in Heading styles, allowing Word to incorporate them into the TOC. The user can choose the fonts to be used, and supply title, keywords etc. for insertion into the document properties header. From version 2.0 onwards the software can create RTF files suitable for conversion into WinHelp files, and will even create the Help project file for you (it created it's own Help file). The software comes with many options to customize the output which can be saved to "policy files" and reloaded at a later date. The software supports the use of wildcards, and can be used for batch conversion. Registered users get access to a console version that is better suited for batch conversions.
