On that voyage Columbus was in command of three ships: the Santa Maria, the Pinta and the Nina. The flagship Santa Maria grounded on a reef on Christmas Eve and sank. Her remnants were used to build a fort on shore, called La Navidad, which became home to 40 marines, the first American colonists. They awaited Columbus return from Spain. Today anyone has a unique chance to feel the spirit of those great events and see American history in making right on the desktop!
